I had actually made tomato soup and gouda grilled cheese for dinner…but forgot to defrost my other loaf of bread on time so the remaining two end crust pieces was shared with Skywalker. Needless to say, we were hungry two hours later. So we sought out some late night sushi and ended up trying Koto Izakaya Sushi & Robata on Alexandra Road in Richmond.
Skywalker ordered this (from the big white plate at the bottom and then clockwise): Red Tuna Tataki, Oyster Motoyaki, Salmon and Toro sashimi, Chopped scallop roll
And I, being still sadly restricted from seafood, though happy to see a nice variety of robata items, ordered these (from top left clockwise): Grilled chicken hearts, Pork Toro (belly) slices, Beef Carpaccio
And you know, it hit the spot. We inhaled our
snack dinner and then while sipping our tea afterwards, surmised that it probably wasn’t a good idea to eat so late (it was 11pm). Oh well. Overall the food was fresh and tasty. Skywalker’s only comment was that the roll wasn’t wrapped very well and the rice was on the harder side…but, we’re at a Chinese run Japanese restaurant where chefs didn’t spend years in sushi school perfecting their craft of sushi making, so that wasn’t a deal breaker by any stretch. All the “proper” Japanese places close after dinner and do not cater to late night snackers (they open until 2am!) so we were happy to find a place that both of us could enjoy.
Pricing wise…our meal came to $33 (no drinks ordered). Given our portion sizes and variety of dishes ordered….it’s a pretty good deal! (At least in our Albertan minds where sushi is rather expensive.) We’ll be back! And if there’s other Izakya and Robata places in Richmond that we should try, please let us know! =)
